Applications Of Ion Exchange Resins

1.Sewage treatment

The demand for ion exchange resins in the sewage treatment industry is large, accounting for about 90% of the production of ion exchange resins, which are used for the removal of various cations and ions in water. At present, ion exchange resin is used in the treatment of pure water in thermal power plants, followed by nuclear energy, semiconductor materials, and electronics industries.

2. Food industry

Ion exchange resin can be used in sugar, chicken essence, wine special, biological products and other industrial equipment. For example, the manufacture of fructose syrup is by extracting starch from corn, and then hydrolysis reaction, producing fructose and glucose, and then ion exchange treatment, can transform the fruit syrup. The use of ion exchange resins in the food industry ranks second after wastewater treatment.

3.Pharmaceutical industry

Ion exchange resins in the pharmaceutical industry play an important role in the development of new antimicrobials and the quality improvement of original antimicrobials. The successful development and design of streptomycin is an outstanding example. In recent years, some studies have been made on the extraction of Chinese medicinal materials.

4. Formation chemistry and crude oil chemical industry

In organic chemistry, acid and base are often used as metal catalysts for esterification, hydrolysis, transesterification, hydration and other reactions. Using ion exchange resin instead of strong oxidant and base can also carry out the above reaction, and has more advantages. If the resin can be used continuously, the product is easy to separate, the tubular reactor will not be etched, will not pollute the environment, and the reaction is easy to control.

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is prepared by the reaction of isobutene with ethanol using a large plate hole ion exchange resin as a catalyst, replacing the original tetraethyl lead which can cause environmental pollution.

5. Ecological and environmental protection

Ion exchange resins have been applied to many ecological and environmental protection problems of great concern. At present, many solutions or non-solutions contain toxic positive or non-positive ions, which can be recycled by resin. Such as the removal of metal ions in electroplating process wastewater, the acquisition of effective substances in film production wastewater.

6. Hydrometallurgy and other forms of business

Ion exchange resin can separate, extract and purify uranium from depleted uranium ore and obtain rare earth elements and precious metals.
