How are food and potable grade resins different from industrial grade resins?

Jan 10, 2024Leave a message

The level of organic leachables in industrial grade ion exchange resins and adsorbents is typically low upon initial use. For resins used in food production and drinking water purification, manufacturers take extra precautions to further reduce these levels to ensure that the resin does not negatively impact the quality of the final product. This commitment to high quality standards ensures that the health and safety of consumers is always a top priority. In addition, the composition of food contact and potable water resins need to meet relevant requirements or regulations. Industrial resins may not meet these requirements.

There are certain resins that are specifically designed for particular applications and are of food and drink grade quality. These specially-developed resins undergo unique treatment during various stages of their production process, as well as post-production, to ensure the creation of a superior and more refined product.

Where a product is available, both as industrial grade and potable grade resins, then the resin will have the same basic chemistry and work in the same manner, but again, it will have additional cleaning stages within the production process, or special post-treatment or cycling between different ionic forms that clean the resin, reducing leachables species from the resin when new.
