In the use of resin, sometimes it is necessary to identify what type of resin belongs to, the following small series will give you a simple and feasible identification method.

Step 1:

A. Take 2mL of the resin sample, place it in a 30mL test tube, and absorb the adhesive water on the resin.

B. Add 1mol/L HCl 5mL, shake for 1-2min, and absorb the upper clear liquid of the resin. Repeat this operation 2-3 times.

C. Add pure water to clean, shake, the upper clear liquid suction. Repeat this operation 2-3 times

D. Add 5mL 10%CuSO4 solution and shake for 1min. Press C to wash thoroughly with pure water.

 

Step 2:

After the first step of treatment, if the resin is discolored (light green), add 5mol/L NH4OH solution 2mL, shake for 1min, and then observe after fully cleaning with pure water.

If the resin is deepened (dark blue) after the above treatment, it is a strong acidic cation exchange resin. If the color of the resin is unchanged (still light green), it is a weak alkaline negative resin.

 

Step 3:

After the first step of treatment, if the resin does not change color, you can follow the following steps:

A. Add 5mL of 1mol/L NaOH, shake for 1min, and then rinse thoroughly by pouring method.

B. Add 5 drops of phenolphthalein, shake for 1min, and rinse thoroughly with pure water.

C. After the above treatment, if the resin is red, it is a strong basic anion exchange resin.

 

Step 4:

After the third step treatment, the resin still does not change color, can be carried out according to the following steps:

A. Add 1mol/L HCl 5mL, shake for 1-2min, and then clean with pure water 2-3 times

B. Add 5 drops of methyl red, shake for 1min, and rinse thoroughly with pure water.

C. After the above treatment, if the resin is pink, it is a weakly acidic cation exchange resin. After treatment, if the resin still does not change color, there is no ion exchange ability.
