Chelating Resin for Gallium Removal

Lanlang® TY CH550 gallium absorbing resin is a chelating resin with amidoxime functional group, containing a =NOH and another active group, such as -NH2, -OH, -SH or =NOH complex chelating resin.

Gallium metal is largely obtained as a by-product during the production of alumina. Employing the resin adsorption method from the Bayer process for creating alumina seed mother liquor can recover trace amounts of dispersed gallium enrichment. The process is uncomplicated and the extraction of gallium has no significant impact on the mother liquor, apart from isolating the gallium element. Additionally, returning the mother liquor will not have any negative impact on alumina production. Overall, this method highlights a positive and viable approach for gallium recovery.

Gallium recovery from spent GaN and GaAs LEDs achieves 99% yield via leaching with HCl after annealing and HNO3, respectively. Sustainable gallium purification techniques include solvent extraction, ionic liquid extraction, and nanofiltration.

Gallium, which is extensively used in the production of semiconductor materials, is present at the parts per million level in Bayer's liquor. The low concentration of gallium in the liquor, along with the high concentration of aluminum, prompted the use of chelating ion exchangers as an alternative separation process.A chelating ion exchange resin with hydroxamic groups attached to the copolymer of acrylonitrile-divinylbenzene has been prepared by suspension polymerization followed by hydrolysis and chelation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride.Adsorption studies of gallium, using the above hydroxamic acid resin, were carried out.Adsorption was dependent on particle size of the resin and optimum conditions are determined for obtaining 0.3- to 0.5-mm particles by varying the composition of the emulsion, using a secondary polymerization technique, and adding of diluents.
